Unboxing My November 2025 Illumicrate Box — Honest Review

A Deep Dive Into This Month’s Magical Reads and Collectibles

There are few things that make my bookish heart happier than seeing that bright yellow Illumicrate box sitting on my doorstep. As someone who mainly reads fantasy and horror, Illumicrate always feels like the book subscription box that “gets it.”

Before we jump in: I paid for the November 2025 Illumicrate box myself. This post is not sponsored.

What Is Illumicrate?

If you’re new to the subscription box world, Illumicrate is a UK-based book box that releases:

  • Monthly book-only and full box subscriptions
  • Exclusive sprayed/stenciled edge editions
  • Foiled covers, custom artwork, and signed bookplates
  • Fandom items inspired by popular SFF books
  • Special edition sets and series boxes

It’s one of the most premium book boxes available, especially for collectors, which is why reviews like this are so helpful before you commit.

This Month’s Theme:

Every Illumicrate box centers around a monthly theme, and this one was Academic Rivals.

What’s Inside the Box:

📚 The Featured Book 📚

The book of the month is A Rather Vengeful Accord by Danielle Knight, and Illumicrate absolutely delivered on the design.

Illumicrate’s exclusive edition includes:

  • An exclusive redesigned cover
  • Full colour art and foil on the hardback
  • Digitally printed edges
  • Illustrated endpapers
  • A bound-in author letter that features a digital signature

The book follows, Halen Kilchoir, a young woman who finally gets the chance to enter the necromancy academy she’s trained for. The catch? She can only enlist if she teams up with her infuriating, talented rival Alastair Faulton. As they train together to fight eldritch monsters, survival depends on unlikely alliances.

🎁 Fandom Items 🎁

Illumicrate always includes a curated mix of practical and collectible items. This month included:

1. The Illumicrate Bookcase Puzzle

I’m always thrilled when Illumicrate includes a puzzle, there’s just something so cozy about their designs. They’re adorable, perfectly shelf-sized, and pair beautifully with an audiobook listening session. This month’s puzzle feels extra special: it celebrates 10 years of Illumicrate and features every single monthly book they’ve ever included. You can bet I’ll be curling up over the holidays to put this one together!

2. Academic Rivals 2026 Multi-Fandom Calendar

This year’s 2026 calendar showcases twelve fun pairings of academic rivals perfectly matching the theme of this month’s box. I love that it’s a practical item I’ll genuinely use.

My only small gripe? It’s strictly a wall calendar this time, unlike last year’s version that could sit neatly on a desk. I usually pass this on to my daughter, who loved having it propped up beside her workspace, but this year we’d have to put a hole in the wall to hang it… and I’m not exactly excited about that.

3. Laundry Bag inspired by Where Sleeping Girls Lie

I’m really loving this laundry bag, another practical item I know I’ll actually use. The quality feels great, and like most Illumicrate products, it seems built to last. I haven’t read the book it’s inspired by yet, but that definitely doesn’t stop me from appreciating the gorgeous artwork featured on it.

4. Demon at the Gates Iron On Patch

This iron-on patch, inspired by A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik, is such a fun little bonus item. I have a feeling one of my kids will claim it immediately and hand it to me to iron onto something for them, and honestly, I can’t blame them.

Overall Vibe & Quality

This box feels deliberately put together. The aesthetics from cover art to edge design to extras all echo the “academic rivalry / dark academy” vibe. As always with Illumicrate, attention to detail is high, and the unboxing feels like getting a curated gift rather than a generic subscription box.

Who This Box Is Perfect For

  • Fantasy readers who love academy / school settings, magic, and rivals-to-lovers vibes
  • Collectors and fans of unique book editions
  • Folks who enjoy a little fandom merch with their books
  • People who love a curated unboxing experience

If you love limited-edition books and enjoy fandom items, the value is absolutely there. If you’re only really interested in the book itself, the book-only subscription might be better.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Stunning exclusive editions
  • High-quality items
  • Consistent curation and strong themes
  • Great for collectors
  • Unique fandom choices

Cons

  • Shipping to Canada can be expensive
  • Items can feel hit-or-miss depending on fandoms
  • Some months feel more “collector” than “practical”
  • Special editions sometimes have long wait times

The November 2025 Illumicrate box delivered. The book, A Rather Vengeful Accord, feels like exactly the kind of read I enjoy, a mix of magic, conflict, and dark academia vibes. This box doesn’t just feel like a “book order,” but a little literary experience.
